Ashby 3 Take The Points At Kirby Muxloe

Ashby 3 travelled to Kirby Muxloe 1 last night and came away with all the points, following a 2.5 - 1.5 win. This takes us level with 5 other teams on 8 points but, unfortunately, behind all of them on game point difference.

Nick Wyld was first to finish with a 10 move grandmaster draw on board 3, before James Foster continued his recent run of good form with a win on board 4 to put us in the lead. Next to finish was Steve E. on board 2, who went into an endgame a pawn up, but had to settle for a draw in a 7 pawn v 6 pawn ending, with no way through. All eyes were then on Tom Gerrard on board 1, who was playing an opponent rated 248 points higher. He was a pawn down in an endgame, where he had Rook, Bishop and 4 pawns against a Rook, Bishop and 5 pawns and looked to be in a very difficult position. However, both Bishops came off the board and Tom pushed 2 connected Queen side pawns to a6 and b6. He then positioned his Rook to threaten mate in one. His opponent managed to find the only move to save the game and a draw was agreed shortly after, the half point giving us the win.
